Dear St. Augustine’s College Community,
It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I write to inform you of the passing of our beloved Brother Finbar Spring, O.S.A. Brother Finbar was not just a member of our school community but a cherished pillar who positively influenced countless lives during his time at St. Augustine's College.
Brother Finbar joined our community in the 1980s and quickly became known for his passion for education and sports, especially Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) sports. His dedication to nurturing young talent in handball was unparalleled. The Friary Abbeyside Ballinacourty Club, which he founded, stands as a testament to his commitment to youth and sports. His efforts were fittingly recognised when he was honoured with the prestigious GAA President's Award in 2011.
Finbar was a proud Kerryman and supporter of all who wear the Green and Gold. He played football with his club An Riocht at full back where few men passed him. He also had honours at all levels of Munster handball and won a number of All-Ireland Handball titles.
Beyond the sports field, Brother Finbar played a vital role in the administration of our college as the bursar for over three decades. His expertise in financial management and resource allocation was crucial in steering our school towards stability and growth. His work behind the scenes, often unnoticed, was as impactful as his more visible roles.
Brother Finbar’s passing marks the end of an era for St. Augustine's College. His unwavering commitment, gentle guidance, and warm presence will be profoundly missed by students, staff, and parents alike. He was a mentor, a coach, a teacher, and above all, a friend to many.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the indelible legacy he leaves behind. Brother Finbar's spirit and teachings will continue to inspire and guide us. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
While funeral arrangements details are not available yet please note that to honour Brother Finbar’s legacy and to allow our community to pay their respects, St. Augustine's College will be closed on the day of his funeral if it is on a school day. We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we ask for everyone’s understanding and support during this difficult time. The funeral service will be a chance for us to come together as a community to celebrate Brother Finbar’s life and the profound impact he had on us all.
We recognise the emotional toll this loss may have on many, especially our students. Our counselling services are available for anyone who needs support during this period of mourning.
Further details regarding the funeral arrangements and the school closure ( required) will be communicated shortly. We encourage our community to join us in honouring a truly extraordinary life and to offer support to each other as we remember Brother Finbar. R.I.P
